The ephemeral beauty of youthby Eyal de Leeuw | 28.06.16
Last week during men’s fashion week in Paris, Michal Chelbin, the acclaimed Tel Avivan photographer, opened an exhibition in Galerie Joseph presenting a special series in collaboration with Dior Homme and Dust Magazine.
It all started two years ago when Kris van Assche, head designer of Dior Homme, received as a present one of Chelbin’s photos (and instagramed it 2 weeks ago). Further communication between the two led to a special series, commissioned by Dior Homme in conjunction with Dust Magazine.
Talking with Telavivian Magazine, Chelbin describes the mutual creative process behind the series, which features Dior Homme 2016 Winter Collection:
Hi Michal, how does your body of work relate to fashion and fashion imagery?
For a while now I wanted to create something of my world that is related to fashion imagery. I knew it must be non-models cast and to have my own point of view on shooting the collection. The collaboration was between me and Kris, with the stylist Mauricio Nardo, who is also creative director of Dust Magazine.
Can you tell us more about the stunning location and the casting process?
We worked with a street casting agent from Belgium who helped us the find the kids. Most of them come from dancing school in Antwerp. Actually three of them were later invited to walk in the Dior Homme show. The idea was to have a large variety of characters, more than just a regular fashion shoot – we ended up with 15. We shot in Saint Ursula, an old educational institute in Mechelen, between Brussels and Antwerp. It’s a 200 years old building and I was very happy to get their permission to film there.
How was your experience collaborating with the stylist- combining your artistic expression with a commercial brand?
It was a great experience working with the team. Me and Mauricio wanted from the beginning to focus on kids and you can see the interesting result as some of the clothes are completely oversize. We had to fit the clothes into the situation and we actually mixed the Dior clothes with the kids own wear.
Chelbin later was invited to document the backstage of the Dior Homme Show and we can’t wait to see the results.
